Central/Eastern Gaelic Football Championship: Squads head to Munich aiming to retain trophies earned in 2018

The final outing in a very busy June for the Vienna Gaels is here, as the club sends men’s and ladies squads to round three of the Central/Eastern European Gaelic Football Championship in Munich this weekend.

Men’s team look to second place after Prague outing

After our men’s side lost out narrowly to Munich Colmcilles in the semi-final of the Prague round of the championship by 0-8 to 0-6, they finished in joint third for the tournament, dropping them to third place overall in the Championship table. Trailing Munich by 0.5 of a point, things are neck and neck between the sides heading into the final round of this year’s regional championship. Meanwhile at the top of the table, an impressive Berlin GAA side has built an unassailable lead as they look to win back-to-back titles for the first time in their history. For this round, the Gaels boast a solid squad featuring the returning Simon Deignan, Alan McKenna and Diarmuid O’Riain, which will also be bolstered by players from the Lazio and Milan clubs.

Ladies team look to lift season with some silverware

After last year’s late season silver-rush, where they took home both the Central/Eastern Shield trophy and the Pan-European Plate trophy, our ladies side will look to retain the first of that double in the final regional round of the season. With a squad featuring team stalwarts such as Zina Scimemi-O’Sullivan and Annaliese O’Malley, they’ll be eager to make up for early season disappointment.

Big day of fixtures await in searing temperatures

First up, our men face the host side at 09:15, before our ladies take on Berlin GAA at 10:10. The men then take on Augsburg at 11:15, while our ladies meet old rivals Prague Hibernians at 11:30. Our final group game sees our men take on neighbours the Slovak Shamrocks at 12:15, before the knockout rounds take place in the afternoon. Stay in touch by following us on FacebookInstagramTwitter and the Vienna Gaels WhatsApp group. A huge day of action awaits!
